Boana calcarata
—
Convict Treefrog
Also known as:
Troschel’s Treefrog
This species was until 2017 placed in the genus Hypsiboas.

These large frogs earned their English name of "Convict Treefrogs" via their prison-outfit-striped sides.
My Travelogues and Trip Lists page includes a complete list of the herps I saw in the wild on my 2016 MT Amazon Expeditions trip.

The "calcarata" part of this frog's scientific name refers to the prominently pointy heels.

On previous trips I had seen either zero or one of these frogs, but this time I saw a bunch. Here is the first, greeting me on my first night at Santa Cruz Forest Reserve.

I guess these are three males trying to attract females, but I'm not sure.

This one wanted to pose for a close-up, so I obliged.

This is not a graceful pose but hey, it works.
